Essential Electronic Components Every DIYer Should Know

1. RESISTORS
What: Limit current flow in a circuit
Units: Ohms
Common values: 220R, 1K, 4.7K, 10K
Color code (4-band):
- Black=0, Brown=1, Red=2, Orange=3, Yellow=4
- Green=5, Blue=6, Violet=7, Gray=8, White=9
Example: Brown-Black-Red-Gold = 1K Ohm (5% tolerance)
Usage: LED current limiting, voltage dividers, pull-up/pull-down

2. CAPACITORS
What: Store and release electrical energy
Units: Farads (commonly uF, nF, pF)
Types:
- Ceramic: Small values (1pF - 1uF), general purpose
- Electrolytic: Large values (1uF - 10000uF), polarized!
- Tantalum: Small size, stable, polarized
Usage: Filtering, timing circuits, decoupling

3. LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes)
What: Light up when current flows through
Colors: Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, White, RGB
Forward voltage: Red=2V, Green=2.2V, Blue=3.2V, White=3.2V
Always use a resistor! Formula:
  R = (Vsupply - Vled) / Iled
  Example: (5V - 2V) / 0.02A = 150 Ohm
Long leg = Anode (+), Short leg = Cathode (-)

4. TRANSISTORS
What: Electronic switch / amplifier
Common types: NPN (2N2222), PNP (2N2907)
NPN Pinout (flat side facing you): E-B-C
- Base: control input
- Collector: output
- Emitter: ground
Usage: Switching loads, signal amplification

5. DIODES
What: One-way valve for electricity
Common: 1N4148 (signal), 1N4007 (power)
Band mark = Cathode (-) side
Usage: Reverse polarity protection, rectification

6. INTEGRATED CIRCUITS (ICs)
Popular ICs for beginners:
- 555 Timer: Oscillator, delay, PWM
- LM7805: 5V voltage regulator
- LM358: Dual op-amp
- ATmega328: Arduino brain (MCU)

7. SENSORS
- LDR (Light Dependent Resistor): detect light
- Thermistor (NTC): detect temperature
- HC-SR04: Ultrasonic distance sensor
- DHT11/DHT22: Temperature and humidity
- PIR: Motion detection

8. MOTOR DRIVERS
- L298N: Dual H-bridge for DC motors
- L293D: Motor driver IC
- ULN2003: Stepper motor driver

9. BUZZERS
- Active buzzer: Just apply voltage, makes sound
- Passive buzzer: Needs PWM signal for tone control

10. BREADBOARD
Not a component but essential!
